Kinetic's new home on codevault, Herdr, and an installer without Fedora's branding.

    What's new

    • Kinetic has moved to the public zypher-systems-public organization on codevault: codevault.sh/zypher-systems-public/kinetic. Packages now come from codevault.sh/api/packages/zypher-systems-public/rpm/fedora-44, whose index is signed with a new key, fingerprint F1CD DF9F E6A1 4978 FC25 31AD 3E8A C258 57C9 840F. kinetic-repos 0.1.0-3 ships the new address and key
    • Herdr, a terminal workspace for running coding agents side by side, is ready to launch like the CLI agents: its first run installs it from herdr.dev (kinetic-agents 0.2.0-3)
    • The installer no longer shows Fedora's name, feedback link, or Bugzilla reports. Its feedback link and error reports go to Kinetic's issue tracker
    • ISOs stay attached to the three newest releases only

    Upgrading from 0.6.0 or earlier

Systems installed from an earlier ISO still look for Kinetic's packages at the old address, which is no longer public, so dnf reports the kinetic repository as failing. Switch it once:

    sudo curl -fsSo /etc/pki/rpm-gpg/RPM-GPG-KEY-codevault-packages https://codevault.sh/api/packages/zypher-systems-public/rpm/repository.key
    sudo sed -i 's#/api/packages/zypher-systems/#/api/packages/zypher-systems-public/#' /etc/yum.repos.d/kinetic.repo
    sudo dnf upgrade --refresh

When dnf asks to import the registry's key, check that its fingerprint is F1CD DF9F E6A1 4978 FC25 31AD 3E8A C258 57C9 840F. The upgrade brings the system to 0.7.0. The two files above end up exactly as kinetic-repos 0.1.0-3 ships them, so the package upgrades cleanly over them.

    Verifying the ISO

    The checksum file is signed with the ZypherOS key, fingerprint 098E 710A DBE3 FEE4 351B 44F4 0EE4 C89F 7AE0 182E (in the repo at packages/kinetic-repos/keys/RPM-GPG-KEY-zypheros):

    gpg --import RPM-GPG-KEY-zypheros
    gpg --verify ZypherOS-Kinetic-0.7.0-x86_64.iso.sha256.asc ZypherOS-Kinetic-0.7.0-x86_64.iso.sha256
    sha256sum -c ZypherOS-Kinetic-0.7.0-x86_64.iso.sha256

Write the ISO straight to a USB drive (dd, or Fedora Media Writer). Installing through Ventoy from a large external SSD has failed once and is still being looked into.

Disk usage, remote desktop, and a Forgejo CLI.

    What's new

    • Filelight shows what's using your disk
    • Remmina for remote desktops: RDP, VNC, SSH, and SPICE, which libvirt VMs use
    • RAR archives open in Ark (unrar)
    • nvtop shows GPU use, including ROCm and Blender jobs
    • For development:
      • direnv loads a project's environment when you enter its folder, already hooked into fish
      • yq handles YAML the way jq handles JSON
      • forgejo-cli (fj) works with PRs, issues, and releases on Forgejo servers such as codevault and Codeberg
    • Kinetic doesn't ship a password manager app. If you use Bitwarden, add its Chromium extension

    Upgrading from 0.5.0

dnf upgrade brings the system to 0.6.0 and adds the fish hook for direnv. The new apps are only in the ISO, so add them once:

    sudo dnf upgrade --refresh
sudo dnf install filelight remmina remmina-plugins-spice unrar nvtop direnv yq forgejo-cli

fj auth login doesn't work with codevault. Create a token in your codevault settings under Applications, then add it with fj -H codevault.sh auth add-token.

More everyday apps for the COSMIC desktop.

    What's new

    • Thunderbird for mail: COSMIC has no mail app of its own
    • GNOME Document Scanner for scanners
    • Firewall settings (firewall-config): open a port in Kinetic's strict firewall zone without the command line
    • git-lfs and wtype for development and Wayland automation
    • The fix for COSMIC's own shortcuts (the Super key, Alt+Tab, workspace keys), which 0.4.0 systems already received as a package update, is now in the ISO

    Upgrading from 0.4.0

dnf upgrade brings the system to 0.5.0. The new apps are only in the ISO, so add them once:

    sudo dnf upgrade --refresh
sudo dnf install thunderbird simple-scan firewall-config git-lfs wtype

Coming from 0.3.0 with Plasma? Follow Moving from Plasma to COSMIC first.

    COSMIC is Kinetic's desktop.

    What's new

    • COSMIC replaces KDE Plasma. COSMIC's login screen, Kinetic's wallpaper and dark theme, and Kinetic's apps in the dock: Files, Chromium, Ghostty, VSCodium, Podman Desktop, DistroShelf, COSMIC Store, and Settings
    • Kinetic's shortcuts: Super+Return, Super+T, and Ctrl+Alt+T open Ghostty; Super+B the browser; Super+E files; Super+Space search. COSMIC's own shortcuts work alongside them
    • Apps: COSMIC's own for files, text, software, video, and screenshots. Okular, Gwenview, Ark, KDE Connect, Partition Manager, and Btrfs Assistant stay, plus a calculator and a system monitor
    • The installer creates your account, and first boot puts it in the docker and libvirt groups, so containers and VMs work without sudo
    • GNOME Keyring holds passwords, unlocked at login
    • Blender renders on AMD GPUs: ROCm's HIP runtime is included (RDNA 1 to RDNA 4)
    • Thunderbolt and USB4 device support (bolt) and Intel's thermal daemon are installed explicitly

    Update after installing

A fix for COSMIC's own shortcuts (the Super key, Alt+Tab, workspace keys) came after this ISO was built. It arrives as a package update, so after installing, run once:

    sudo dnf upgrade --refresh

then log out and back in.

    Moving from 0.3.0 with Plasma

No reinstall is needed. Follow Moving from Plasma to COSMIC: note your sign-ins, update, switch the login screen, then remove Plasma once you're happy. Passwords move from KDE Wallet to GNOME Keyring, so apps that keep secrets in the wallet (Chromium's saved logins, VSCodium, Cursor, gh) need signing in once more.

COSMIC on trial next to Plasma, and better tools for containers.

    What's new

    • COSMIC, on trial. System76's COSMIC desktop is installed next to KDE Plasma. Pick it from the session menu on the login screen; Plasma stays the default, and Plasma Login stays the login screen. The COSMIC session gets Kinetic's apps in its dock, skips COSMIC's own first-run setup (Plasma Setup has already done it), and keeps KDE's Xwayland video bridge out of COSMIC sessions. COSMIC still uses its own look and shortcuts
    • Podman Desktop, to manage rootless Podman containers, distrobox boxes, and Docker Engine's containers in one window. Anonymous usage data and its own update checks are off; dnf updates it
    • DistroShelf, a graphical manager for distrobox: create, enter, and upgrade boxes, and add their apps to the menu
    • Both apps ship as RPMs built by Kinetic, not Flatpaks, and a weekly check proposes updates when upstream releases

    Upgrading from 0.2.x

dnf upgrade brings the system to 0.3.0, but new packages need installing once:

    sudo dnf upgrade --refresh
sudo dnf install kinetic-cosmic podman-desktop distroshelf

Coming from 0.2.0 with the old GitHub Pages repository? Point the system at codevault first, as in the 0.2.1 notes:

    sudo dnf install https://codevault.sh/api/packages/zypher-systems/rpm/fedora-44/package/kinetic-repos/0.1.0-2.fc44/noarch

First-run fixes for 0.2.0 "Daily driver", and the move to codevault.

    What's new

    • The ISO's boot menu starts ZypherOS by default. The entry that checks the whole medium first is still in the menu
    • Plasma Setup shows its welcome text over a blurred, darkened Kinetic wallpaper instead of on top of the wordmark
    • No KDE Wallet wizard in the live session when unlocking a disk
    • Installed systems check the Kinetic repository for updates every hour, not every six
    • Kinetic moves to codevault: packages come from its RPM registry, and the ISO is built by codevault's runners and attached to this release
    • Documentation and bug report links point to codevault

    Upgrading from 0.2.0

The old package repository on GitHub Pages is gone, so point an installed system at the new one once:

    sudo dnf install https://codevault.sh/api/packages/zypher-systems/rpm/fedora-44/package/kinetic-repos/0.1.0-2.fc44/noarch
    sudo dnf upgrade --refresh

dnf asks once to import the registry's key. Its fingerprint is 02FD 8554 3792 3491 1067 0877 04F2 E1A4 4156 CFD5. After that, updates arrive with dnf upgrade as before.
