ZypherOS Kinetic 0.6.0: everything in dev since 0.5.0.

Changes

  • New apps in the ISO: Filelight (disk usage), Remmina with its SPICE plugin (RDP, VNC, SSH, and SPICE for libvirt VMs), unrar so Ark opens RAR archives, and nvtop for the GPU.
  • For development: direnv (fish loads it, from kinetic-shell 0.1.0-2), yq, and forgejo-cli (fj), a new Kinetic package repackaged from upstream's Linux build on Codeberg.
  • scripts/update-upstream.sh also checks releases on Forgejo servers (UPSTREAM_FORGEJO=host/owner/repo), so the weekly workflow covers forgejo-cli.
  • Docs: decisions.md records the new apps, why forgejo-cli was picked over tea, and that Kinetic ships no password manager app. Roadmap and README are updated for 0.6.0.
  • Version 0.6.0: zypheros-release 44-7, kiwi, and common.sh.

Commits: 01c8c50 (apps), fac6078 (release bump).

Checks

  • All 11 Kinetic RPMs build (./scripts/build-rpms.sh), and kinetic.xml validates with xmllint.
  • In a clean Fedora 44 container, all new packages install together, fj runs, and fish loads the direnv hook and applies an .envrc.
  • Live session of an ISO built from 01c8c50 (2026-10-29):
    • every new package is in the image
    • fj reaches codevault
    • direnv works in fish
    • Filelight and Remmina open on COSMIC, and Remmina lists all four protocols
    • no new failed units (mcelog fails only in the VM; on AMD hardware it is skipped)
  • Not done: a fresh install from this ISO, and ShellCheck on update-upstream.sh (only bash -n).

After merge

The Packages workflow publishes forgejo-cli 0.7.0-1, kinetic-shell 0.1.0-2, and zypheros-release 44-7. A v0.6.0 tag on main builds the ISO. Installed systems add the apps with:

sudo dnf install filelight remmina remmina-plugins-spice unrar nvtop direnv yq forgejo-cli

Needs 2 external reviews before merging.

Filelight for disk usage, Remmina for remote desktops (with SPICE for
libvirt VMs), unrar so Ark opens RAR archives, and nvtop for the GPU.
For development: direnv, loaded in fish by kinetic-shell 0.1.0-2, yq,
and forgejo-cli (fj), repackaged from upstream's Linux build since its
source release doesn't build offline. update-upstream.sh now also checks
releases on Forgejo servers such as Codeberg, where forgejo-cli lives.

Also records that Kinetic ships no password manager app: Bitwarden's
Chromium add-on meets the requirements on its own.

Reviewed commit fac60783b85e6244e75902449e7843b3951d19f0 (base e3728c460248d54f1da6fbd8022f548ecad09ba7). Release 0.6.0 adds Filelight, Remmina and its SPICE plugin, unrar, nvtop, direnv, yq, and a Kinetic forgejo-cli RPM, and teaches scripts/update-upstream.sh to follow Forgejo releases. No actionable findings.

A formal approval was refused because this account opened the pull request. This comment is the review.

Checked:

  • Version strings agree: README, kiwi/Kinetic.kiwi, and scripts/common.sh are 0.6.0; zypheros-release is 44-7 with kinetic_version 0.6.0; kinetic-shell is 0.1.0-2. The 0.5.0 lines that remain are the previous release's roadmap section and changelog entry.
  • UPSTREAM_FORGEJO=codeberg.org/forgejo-contrib/forgejo-cli becomes https://codeberg.org/api/v1/repos/forgejo-contrib/forgejo-cli/releases/latest. Packages that only set UPSTREAM_GITHUB still use the GitHub API. The rest of the script updates whatever SourceN URLs the spec expands, so a later forgejo-cli release retargets the tarball and both license files.
  • Codeberg's latest release is v0.7.0, and the asset name matches Source0. SHA-256 of that tarball and of LICENSE-APACHE and LICENSE-MIT from the raw/tag/v0.7.0 URLs match the three %global sourceN_sha256 lines. The tarball contains a top-level fj.
  • fj is a dynamically linked x86-64 ELF (libssl.so.3, libcrypto.so.3, libz.so.1, glibc). It runs here and writes bash, fish, and zsh completion scripts. rpmbuild will require those libraries. The builder image installs rpm-build, which brings in the shell-completion macros the spec uses.
  • The fish direnv line is the upstream hook and only runs when direnv is installed. kinetic.xml installs direnv in the image.
  • Fedora 44's yq package is mikefarah/yq. unrar is available from the rpmfusion-nonfree repo already listed in kiwi/kinetic/repositories.xml.

Checks not run here: no Forgejo Actions run exists for this commit (Packages runs on main, ISO on a version tag). This review did not rebuild the RPMs or the ISO. The PR description reports a local RPM build, a Fedora 44 container install, and a live session of an ISO built from 01c8c50.

Review: Approved

Reviewed commit fac6078 (head of dev, base e3728c4). Note: the signed-in account opened this PR, so codevault refuses a formal approve — this comment is the verdict.

Approved. The release bump is consistent everywhere it should be (0.6.0 in kiwi/Kinetic.kiwi, scripts/common.sh, zypheros-release 44-7; kinetic-shell 0.1.0-2 carries the direnv hook), the new forgejo-cli package is correctly built, and the new Forgejo support in update-upstream.sh works.

What was checked

  • forgejo-cli 0.7.0-1 spec: all three sourceN_sha256 checksums match the actual upstream files (downloaded from Codeberg and verified); the tarball contains fj at top level (so %setup -q -c + install … fj is right); fj completion bash|fish|zsh all run; %{bash,fish,zsh}_completions_dir resolve on Fedora 44. Package builds cleanly via ./scripts/build-rpms.sh forgejo-cli.
  • Other touched packages: kinetic-shell and zypheros-release also build via build-rpms.sh. rpmlint reports only pre-existing findings (use-of-RPM_SOURCE_DIR in kinetic-shell, warnings in zypheros-release) plus the expected no-%check/no-%build for a prebuilt-binary repackage.
  • update-upstream.sh: bash -n clean; the new UPSTREAM_FORGEJO path works end to end — https://codeberg.org/api/v1/repos/forgejo-contrib/forgejo-cli/releases/latest answers the constructed URL, tag v0.7.0 strips to the spec's version, and a dry run reports "0.7.0 is current" with no side effects. The GitHub path is untouched.
  • ISO packages: all new Fedora packages (filelight, remmina, remmina-plugins-spice, unrar, nvtop, direnv, yq) exist in the Fedora 44 / updates repos; kinetic.xml validates with xmllint; kinetic.fish parses (fish --no-execute).
  • Docs (README, decisions, roadmap) are consistent with the changes and each other.

Non-blocking notes

  1. kinetic.xml comment "7-Zip comes in as a dependency" is misleading. unrar is a wrapper for unrar-free and pulls in nothing else; 7-Zip (7zip) is in the image only because ark requires p7zip-plugins, which 7zip provides — and that was already true before this PR. Worth rewording on a docs pass.
  2. The PR body's live-session tests confirm every new package is in the image, but nothing actually opens a RAR archive through Ark. unrar-free 0.3.3 is libarchive-based and extracts RAR3/RAR5 fine from the command line, so the claim is plausible — but a 30-second manual check in the live session (open a .rar in Ark, extract it) would close the loop on the one feature whose stated purpose is Ark.

Checks were run locally on fac6078 as listed above; no CI runs exist for this head (workflows trigger on pushes to main and tags).

Merged by fast-forward: main now points at fac6078, the head of this PR, after the two approving reviews above. It was pushed directly rather than through the merge button, so codevault didn't mark the PR merged on its own, and the merge API now has nothing left to merge. Closing it by hand.

Tag v0.6.0 is on fac6078. The Packages workflow (run 15) and the ISO workflow (run 16) are running.
